Late-night update after a dramatic accident in the Tour de Pologne. Bad news.
For hours, only snippets of information about Filippo Baroncini's health reached us. Michał Kwiatkowski revealed that he saw him in a ditch, covered in blood, and Czesław Lang admitted that the Italian was unconscious in the ambulance to the hospital. It's no wonder that worst-case scenarios were being dreamed up.
– The team doctors are with him, there is no threat to his life, but I can't say more because I received a call from the UAE team asking us not to provide any information and to leave it to the team – Czesław Lang told us when we contacted him after 10 p.m. asking about new news about Baroncini.
The official announcement came in the middle of the night. "Seriously injured."We had to wait for specifics until 11:32 p.m. That's when the UAE Team Emirates team, which includes both the Italian and Rafał Majka, issued an official statement.
We translate it in its entirety.
Dr. Adrian Rotunno (Head of the Medical Team): "Unfortunately, Filippo Baroncini was seriously injured in a crash on stage three today in the Tour de Pologne. He suffered multiple facial injuries, including a fractured cervical vertebra (with no neurological sequelae), fractures to the facial bones and collarbone. He is currently being treated in hospital and under the supervision of our medical team. We will keep you updated on his condition, but all our thoughts are with Filippo."
Baroncini is a highly talented Italian cyclist. He's 24 years old and was the 2021 U21 World Champion. Amidst the deluge of bad news, however, we have to be grateful that he didn't suffer a neurological spinal injury.
Another UAE rider, Rafał Majka, was also injured in the crash. The Pole, who is retiring after this season, posted a photo of his injuries on social media.
"Your positive energy will come in handy," he wrote to his fans. According to our information, Majka's biggest problem is pain in her right leg, which is also being intensively addressed by doctors and physiotherapists at the UAE. It's not 100% certain she will compete in the fourth stage of the Tour de Pologne. A decision will be made on Thursday morning.
Here's a look back at the dramatic moments. We know who was at fault. The dramatic accident occurred in the final kilometers of the third stage . "It was a difficult situation, I thought I wouldn't get up. I was next to Baroncini. I called the medics to him, in this situation, it's normal that the race was neutralized because there were no ambulances ahead," Michał Kwiatkowski recounted in an interview with Eurosport.
According to the cyclists, the recklessness of some riders, who took the winding descent too quickly, was the deciding factor. "Everyone knew those corners. It's clear that the route today was very dangerous, but you had to be careful, and if you don't calculate well due to fatigue, that's how it ends," Kwiatkowski said in an interview with Eurosport.
We invite you to watch live coverage of the fourth stage of the Tour de Pologne on Thursday from 11 a.m. on Przegląd Sportowy Onet.
