Legia's promotion after a thriller. Only one question mark remains
The players from Słupsk, the sixth team after the regular season, defeated PGE Start in their own arena for the second time by a large margin, this time 89:57, and tied 2-2. The leader of the Blacks, American point guard Alex Stein (selected for the first five of the season), was absent from the court in Słupsk. He suffered a knee injury in Tuesday's match in a seemingly harmless situation - as it turned out after tests, a very serious one - a ruptured cruciate ligament in the knee, which means the end of the season for him, surgery and several months of rehabilitation.
The best player among Czarni, the team of Latvian coach Roberts Stelmahers, was Justice Sueing, who scored 25 points and had 8 rebounds. The decisive match will take place on Sunday in Lublin, i.e. on the court of the third team in the Orlen Basket League table after the regular season. The winner of this duel will play in the semifinals with the defending champion Trefl Sopot.
Legia Warsaw was losing in Wałbrzych in the third quarter to the newcomer 50:60, and less than a minute before the end of the regular time 73:79, but despite this, in a tight ending the players from the capital tied the score after a rebound by Croatian Mate Vucic and a throw by Andrzej Pluta nine seconds before the end of the period (78:78). The players from Wałbrzych did not respond with a precise shot, and in overtime they were completely unable to break the Warsaw players, who felt the wind in their sails. After actions by Andrzej Pluta and leader Kameron McGusty, Legia had an 8:0 series and did not give up the match to their opponents.
Legia Warsaw will play against Anwil WłocławekThe visiting team was led by the best basketball player of the regular season, McGusty, who scored 26 points, had 9 assists and 6 rebounds. The visitors hit 13 of 30 three-point shots (43 percent), while the hosts hit 10 of 29 (34 percent) and won the battle under the boards 45:36. Górnik, led by coach Andrzej Adamek, was the revelation of the season as a newcomer: it won the Polish Cup (it defeated Legia, the defending champion, in the quarterfinals) and finished the OBL in fifth place.
Legia will face the best team after the regular season in the semi-finals, Anwil Włocławek, which won 3-1 against Arriva Polski Cukier Toruń in the quarter-finals. The first matches in this pair will be held on Tuesday, May 27 in Kujawy.
Trefl's rivalry with the winner of Czarnia/PGE Start will begin a day later, on Wednesday in Sopot. Trefl defeated the Polish vice-champion King Szczecin 3-1.
The semi-finals will be played to three wins. The Anwil and Trefl basketball players, as higher seeds, have the advantage of the court, which means they will host the first two and possibly the fifth, decisive match.
