The dream debut of the new club in MLS! They defeated the US champions straight away
The match was preceded by ceremonies honoring both teams: the visitors were welcomed as the 30th team in the US Premier League, while the hosts celebrated a record sixth MLS championship title. However, later on, only the visitors had reason to celebrate.
San Diego's first ever goal in this competition was assisted by Mexican Hirving Lozano, Italian champion with Napoli and two-time winner of the Dutch top league with PSV Eindhoven.
The home team included German Marco Reus, who played for Borussia Dortmund for many years, and Japanese Maya Yoshida, known from his appearances at Southampton and Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen.
LA Galaxy suffered their first home league defeat since October 21, 2023.
