Chaos at Portugal's airports. It's not a one-day strike

The introduction of new control systems has led to huge frustration for passengers flying into Lisbon and Faro, the only airport in the Algarve. In the coming days, you will have to be patient. The authorities announced that "from today (19 May – ed.) the entry of foreigners into the country has become more rigorous". The new border control systems will be in force at Portuguese airports and seaports.
Chaos at airports in PortugalThe system, which is part of a European plan, requires “collecting biometric data,” taking facial photos and fingerprints. The website portugalresident.com reports that problems in the initial phase of its operation may have been caused by too few staff to operate it.
As always when introducing new systems, it is hoped that over time they will contribute to streamlining clearance processes and increasing border security. Pedro Moura, General Coordinator of Portugal’s Border and Immigration Coordination Unit, SSI, said the new rules were “fundamental to ensuring that Portugal is prepared to operate with the most modern European systems at its borders, while maintaining the highest standards of security and service to citizens.”
Queues in FaroProblems that weren’t the result of the new features were even earlier at Faro Airport. Long lines and delays at passport control were up to three hours long. Tourists were tired, angry and questioning the Algarve’s readiness for the peak tourist season. “EU passport holders were getting through in about 30-45 minutes. UK and other passport holders were getting through in about 1.5-2 hours. Bring water and snacks and be prepared,” warned one passenger. Another commenter noted that it had nothing to do with the “Brexit queue” but with the morning arrivals and staffing levels.
APAL – Agência de Promoção de Albufeira, the tourism promotion agency for the city of Albufeira, responded to the disruption by issuing an official statement expressing “deep concern” about the long queues and delays at the airport, warning that such issues threaten the image and economic health of the region.
