Guimarães promotes International Meeting on Environmental Education

The city of Guimarães, elected European Green Capital 2026, hosts another “International Meeting on Environmental Education” which, in this second edition, brings to the discussion the opportunities of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of sustainability and the environment.
“In the current context of climate change and environmental degradation, AI offers new opportunities to improve sustainable education, making it more effective, accessible and personalized. In this sense, the international meeting aims to explore the intersections between AI and environmental education, discussing how emerging technologies can be used to promote sustainability and environmental awareness”, indicates the organization of the event dedicated to the theme “Environmental (Re)Education? The challenge of emerging smart technologies”.
Promoted by the Landscape Laboratory, one of the milestones of the municipality's more than decade-long environmental journey, the event will bring together AI experts, environmentalists, educators, researchers and students to share knowledge, experiences and good practices, on February 27th, 28th and March 1st.
The II International Meeting on Environmental Education , which fits “into Guimarães’ vision as a leading city in the green transition, reinforcing its role as European Green Capital 2026”, highlights the organization, will feature a series of lectures, round tables, displays of tools and technological pitches, presentations of scientific papers, oral communications, including twinned cities and posters.
Francisco Chinesta, from the University Institute of Paris, João Porto de Albuquerque, from the University of Glasgow, and Vítor Carvalho, Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA) and the European Commission for AI and Data in Education, then among the invited speakers.
The event begins at 9:30 am on February 27, with speeches by Domingos Bragança, Mayor of Guimarães, and Adelina Pinto, President of the Board of Directors of the Landscape Laboratory.
The “ Cradle City” was elected European Green Capital 2026 in November last year, less than ten years after submitting its first application. The Strategic Plan – European Green Capital 2026 (CVE 2026), voted unanimously, was approved by the local authority in the middle of this month.
Environmental sustainability has been part of the political agenda of the Municipality of Guimarães since 2013, having launched, the following year, Guimarães 2030: Governance Ecosystem .
