Roberta Flack, the singer most famous for her 1973 cover of the song "Killing Me Softly With His Song," has died. The R&B and pop singer was 88, Variety reported. "We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of the glorious Roberta Flack this morning, February 24, 2025," read a statement released by her representatives. "She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator." Flack became famous when director and actor Clint Eastwood used a version of the singer's song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face " in the 1971 film Play Misty for Me . Roberta Flack's recording of "Killing Me Softly With His Song" first appeared in 1973.
She has won five Grammys and been nominated eight times. Roberta Flack also created the School of Music that bears her name, which is located in New York and welcomes children between the ages of six and 14.
In 2022, Roberta Flack announced that she had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: she could no longer sing.
