Tom Cavalcante criticizes Leo Lins' eight-year prison sentence: 'Exaggerated'

Comedian Tom Cavalcante criticized the 8-year prison sentence against fellow comedian Leo Lins. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, the 10th, the veteran considered the measure 'excessive'.

Tom Cavalcante is one of the presenters of the 5th Charity Auction of the Neymar Jr. Institute , which takes place this Tuesday, at Mercado Pago Arena Pacaembu, in São Paulo. On the 'red carpet' of the party, the comedian spoke to Terra and spoke about the controversy involving Leo Lins .

"Humor evolves and becomes more sensitive. Everyone is trying to understand this process. We have comedians who were sued in the past, like Chico Anysio, who was censored, Renato Aragão and myself, who went through several lawsuits," he explained.

"I am not an expert on the law, this is my humble opinion as a citizen, and the punishment given to Leo Lins, aged eight, was very severe. If there is a law, it should be enforced, but not in such a harsh way," said Tom Cavalcante.

"While we're here, parents are being killed by drunk drivers, children are being murdered, the case of the cyclist who was shot here in São Paulo won't leave my head. Things like this, so let's increase the spirituality of this country that needs it," he concluded.

Comedian Leo Lins was sentenced to 8 years, three months and nine days in prison for the crimes of discrimination and hate speech committed during a comedy show. The sentence was handed down by the 3rd Criminal Court of São Paulo and he can still appeal.

The sentence, in addition to the prison sentence of 8 years, 3 months and 9 days, in a closed regime, also determines that the artist pay a fine equivalent to 1,117 minimum wages, based on the value at the time the show was recorded, in addition to compensation of R$303.6 thousand for collective moral damages.
