Accident on the A2 leaves one dead and one seriously injured

A woman died and a man was seriously injured this Saturday, following the skidding of a light passenger vehicle on the Motorway 2 (A2), near Ourique, Beja district, said sources from the GNR and Civil Protection.

A source from the GNR's Beja Territorial Command told Lusa news agency that the fatal victim was a 72-year-old woman and the seriously injured man was a 56-year-old man. The information was confirmed by the same outlet to Rádio Observador, with traffic currently restricted.

Speaking to Lusa, a source from the Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Baixo Alentejo indicated that the alert for the accident was given at 7:56 am, and that it occurred at kilometre 166, north-south direction, in the Union of Parishes of Panoias and Conceição, in the municipality of Ourique, district of Beja.

The same source indicated that the woman's death was declared at the scene and the seriously injured person was transported to Beja Hospital.

24 personnel were involved in the rescue operations, assisted by nine vehicles, including an emergency medical and resuscitation vehicle (VMER) from Beja Hospital and an Immediate Life Support (SIV) ambulance from Castro Verde.
