PGR speaks out in favor of house arrest for Roberto Jefferson

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) spoke out, this Friday (9), in favor of the house arrest regime for Roberto Jefferson .

The PGR understood that the change was necessary for health reasons of the former federal deputy, sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to more than 9 years in prison for an attack on the exercise of powers, incitement to crime and homophobia.

In the opinion, the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, cited medical reports sent by Hospital Samaritano Botafogo, where Jefferson has been hospitalized since June 2023 , which describe a clinical picture of convulsive crises, caloric-protein malnutrition, possible focus of infection in the oral cavity and severe depressive syndrome.

In addition, the documents indicate a history of a series of types of cancer: pancreatic, thyroid and colon; as well as diabetes.

“Preventive detention is an extreme personal precautionary measure, which will only be determined when, in the specific case, the imposition of alternative measures is not appropriate,” argued Gonet.

“In light of the most recent documentation, it is imperative to recognize the impossibility of carrying out treatment within the prison system,” he continued. “Therefore, it is necessary, appropriate and proportionate to replace preventive detention with home confinement.”

In April, the Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region (TRF-2) had already converted the former deputy's preventive detention to house arrest, in the process relating to the occasion when Jefferson attacked federal police officers with grenades and gunshots while resisting arrest , in 2022.

Due to the proceedings in the Supreme Court , however, he remained in a closed regime. Now, with the statement from the PGR, it is up to the Supreme Court, through the reporting minister, Alexandre de Moraes, to define how Jefferson will serve the sentence imposed by the Supreme Court.
