José Fontán renews with Arouca

José Fontán has renewed his contract with Arouca until 2027, the I Liga football club announced today, thus ensuring the continuity of its most used player in the “wolves” team last season. The 25-year-old Spanish central defender arrived in Portuguese football in July 2024, from Celta de Vigo, having made 31 starts for Arouca in his debut season, between the league and the Portuguese Cup, more than any other player in the squad. With Vasco Seabra, the Spanish under-21 international has established a partnership with Chico Lamba that has prevailed in the Arouca starting eleven, with the club also having secured, already in this off-season, the permanent continuity of Boris Popovic in the centre of defence.
A graduate of Celta de Vigo, he was always contractually linked to the Spanish club until arriving at Arouca, adding his first experience abroad with Go Ahead Eagles, from the Netherlands, on loan, in 2022/2023. In the 2023/24 season, Fontán had been on loan to Cartagena, where he was one of the highlights of the Spanish second division.
