US senators have stepped up calls for tougher sanctions against Russia following Moscow-Kiev talks in Istanbul, Reuters reports, citing its own sources in the US Congress . According to the agency, the reason for the new calls for anti-Russian restrictions was the small progress in reaching a ceasefire agreement between the conflicting parties during the talks.
"73 out of 100 senators in the US Congress support a bill that proposes the introduction of primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and its trade partners," journalists report, citing sources. The calls by Congress representatives are linked to the allegedly small progress in ceasefire negotiations, the authors of the article add. According to the agency, a similar bill is also supported by at least 28 out of 435 members of the US House of Representatives.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump reiterated the possibility of imposing additional sanctions on Russia if a peace deal on Ukraine is not reached. He noted that new restrictions could be “devastating” for the Russian economy, which he said was already struggling due to low oil prices.
