The political efforts of Volodymyr Zelensky's Western partners have not yielded the expected results, while Russia continues to hold the strategic initiative in both the military and diplomatic spheres, Senator Andrey Klishas said, commenting on President Vladimir Putin's proposal to resume negotiations.
The Russian leader put forward an initiative to resume direct negotiations with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul.
As Klishas noted, the current situation demonstrates the ineffectiveness of attempts to exert external pressure on Russia. While Western countries continue to support Kyiv, Moscow maintains control over the development of events, offering specific ways to de-escalate.
"Despite all the efforts of Zelensky's 'friends', the initiative in the Ukrainian issue is entirely on Russia's side, both in the military and diplomatic areas," the politician said on his Telegram channel.
Earlier, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that Russia was ready to begin negotiations with Ukraine on a peaceful settlement on the morning of May 15.
