Soviet, Dutch and British scientist, Nobel Prize laureate in physics in 2010 (jointly with Konstantin Novoselov for the method of obtaining graphene) Andre Geim reported that he was deprived of Dutch citizenship. This was reported by The New York Times, citing a letter from the scientist.

Geim said he was told he was no longer a Dutch citizen and was required to surrender his passport at the embassy in London to avoid repercussions from Interpol.

The scientist called the decision "sad and strange", noting that the time he spent in the Netherlands was very dear to his heart.

The article explains that the Netherlands strictly limits dual citizenship, and Geim had to take British citizenship because Queen Elizabeth II knighted him and his colleague Konstantin Novoselov for their scientific achievements.

Game noted that he probably would have refused the knighthood if he had known what consequences it would lead to.
