A major geomagnetic storm that began on the last day of September has now lasted for approximately 30 hours, demonstrating unusual persistence. This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences on its official Telegram channel.
According to monitoring data, the situation in near-Earth space remains unstable and has worsened significantly over the past 24 hours. Key solar wind parameters have increased significantly: its speed near Earth has increased from 400 to 700 km/s, and the plasma temperature has tripled.
Some stabilization is associated with a decrease in the interplanetary magnetic field, whose peak values previously caused the most powerful disturbances. It is this decrease that is currently keeping the storm's intensity at a moderate G1-G2 level on a five-point scale.
Last night, residents of many regions of Russia, including the Moscow region, witnessed a rare phenomenon: the aurora borealis. In the Moscow region, the glow was barely visible to the naked eye, but was clearly recorded by smartphones and cameras. A significant number of sightings were also reported from the northeastern regions of the country. The forecast for the next 24 hours remains unfavorable.
Although the storm may weaken to a minimum "yellow" level in the coming hours, the overall situation is not expected to return to normal. Moreover, for the first time in many days, astronomers are predicting a high probability, over 50%, of powerful X-class solar flares, which could trigger a new surge in geomagnetic activity.
