How atmospheric pressure affects fish bite and why I only trust a bite predictor

For several seasons now, I have been going fishing exclusively based on a bite predictor – and the results are impressive. Today I will tell you how pressure affects fish activity, why you shouldn’t rely on luck, and how to assemble your own barometer that will show when the bite will be best!
Many fishermen have noticed: there are days when the fish bite actively, and sometimes there is complete silence. The reason is often hidden in sharp pressure surges.
If the pressure changes smoothly, the fish hardly react. But with sharp changes the following happens:
- The density of the water changes – the fish feels discomfort.
- Oxygen levels decrease, which inhibits activity.
- The fish becomes lethargic, loses orientation and leaves its usual places.
💡 With sharp changes in atmospheric pressure, there will be almost no bite!
Previously, like many others, I relied on the weather forecast, but it often did not match the actual conditions. Then I decided to listen to the advice of a fisherman I knew – to create my own bite predictor.
I am a member of a fishing community and took part in an experiment where fishermen compared their catches with barometer readings every day.
The result was impressive: in 95% of cases, the fish activity coincided with changes in pressure.
Since then I have completely switched to this method - and now my fishing has become much more productive!
This device works without batteries or complex electronics – and you can make it in 5 minutes from scrap materials.
- Glass jar (1-2 liters)
- A transparent tube (for example, from a cocktail)
- Metal lid
- Hot melt glue or sealant
- Water
- Pour half of the cold water into the jar.
- We make a hole in the metal lid and insert a tube into it. The lower edge of the tube should be 1 cm from the bottom, and the upper edge should protrude by 7-10 cm.
- We fix the tube using hot glue or sealant.
- We screw the lid onto the jar and additionally glue it.
💡 Tip: To better see the water level in the tube, place a small piece of wine cork inside.
Basic principle: The higher the water level in the tube, the more active the bite!
- If the water rises, the fish will bite actively.
- If the water level has dropped, the bite will be weak.
- If the water level in the tube is stable, the bite will be normal.
✅ It shows exactly when the fish will bite. ✅ Allows you not to waste time on unsuccessful fishing. ✅ Works without electronics and weather forecasts.
✅ Easy to make – can be assembled in 5 minutes.
Now I only fish using a bite predictor – try it too!
