Mysterious death of an expatriate! He disappeared during a break and was found exhausted 7 hours later.
While traveling from Germany to Ankara with his wife, Selim Güzel (70) disappeared after stopping his vehicle on the TEM Highway in Sakarya for a restroom break. Güzel, who was found exhausted seven hours later by the rescue team, died in the hospital to which he was taken.
According to DHA news, while on patrol on the TEM Highway towards Ankara at around 22:00, the Highway Gendarmerie noticed a car with a German license plate parked in the far left lane, which had been closed with buoys due to road maintenance work.

Approaching the vehicle, the teams encountered a woman named EG (65) sitting alone inside. EG requested assistance, stating that they were traveling from Germany to Ankara, that her husband had pulled over to a rest area in Ankara to use the toilet, but had not returned after more than an hour.

Reinforced gendarmerie teams were then requested to the area. The gendarmerie teams conducted a detailed search of a wide area, including the rest area and its surroundings, as well as bushes, and searched under parked vehicles. AFAD and gendarmerie commandos dispatched to the area also joined the effort. The same area was searched repeatedly with night-vision drones and tracking dogs. Considering the possibility of the woman's mistake, a search was also conducted along the highway towards Istanbul. The search, which expanded into the forested area, continued throughout the night.

Around 5:30 a.m., Selim Güzel was found in a wooded area behind the rest area, where he had attempted to climb over the wire fence and into the forest. After receiving treatment, the exhausted Güzel was taken to Hendek State Hospital by paramedics. Despite doctors' best efforts, Güzel was unable to be saved.

Initial findings indicate no suspicious circumstances have been identified in the incident, and security camera footage from the rest stop has been reviewed. Güzel's exact cause of death will be determined following an autopsy.
