Serdar Ortaç sentenced to 10 months in prison for encouraging illegal betting

The lawyer of the defendant Serdar Ortaç, who is not in custody, and the lawyer of the Spor Toto Organization Presidency, which is a party to the case, were present at the hearing at the Istanbul 25th Criminal Court of First Instance.
Ortaç's lawyer requested an acquittal decision, arguing that the crime his client was accused of was not one that could be committed intentionally and that his client did not encourage or consent to the sharing that was the subject of the crime.
The judge who concluded the case sentenced Ortaç to 1 year in prison and a 5-day fine for "encouraging people to advertise and otherwise play fixed-odds or pari-mutuel betting or games of chance based on sports competitions."
The judge reduced the sentence to 10 months on the grounds that the defendant Serdar Ortaç showed remorse during the trial, and decided to postpone the announcement of the verdict because Ortaç displayed positive attitude and behavior during the hearing and it was believed that he would not commit the crime again.
From the indictmentAn investigation was launched against Serdar Ortaç by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Cyber Crimes Investigation Bureau for allegedly encouraging illegal betting.
In the indictment prepared by the prosecutor's office, Ortaç was asked to be sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison and a fine of up to 3,000 days for "advertising and otherwise encouraging people to play fixed odds or pari-mutuel betting or games of chance based on sports competitions."
