Statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on foot and mouth disease

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has issued a written statement regarding allegations of disruptions in animal health services related to foot-and-mouth disease. The statement, shared on the ministry's social media account, emphasized that some of the content circulating publicly is incomplete, distorted, and misleading.
In the statement, it was stated that animal sales points were temporarily closed in order to prevent the spread of the newly detected foot and mouth disease serotype SAT1 and that the vaccine developed against this type was produced under the coordination of the Foot and Mouth Disease Institute Directorate.
The Ministry reported that approximately 6 million doses of the SAT1 vaccine have been delivered to the field to date and that vaccine production capacity is sufficient. Vaccine production continues 24/7. The statement noted that an additional 2.6 million doses will be produced by July 20th.
10,000 veterinarians in field screeningThe statement stated that approximately 10,000 veterinarians working in 81 provinces and 922 districts across Turkey are carrying out vaccinations and field screenings with great dedication, and it was announced that animal markets will gradually reopen in regions where vaccinations are completed.
"There is no problem in supplying meat"The Ministry warned against the panic being created among the public. "There is currently no problem with our consumers' access to meat," the statement said, emphasizing that the scientifically unfounded comments circulating on social media were untrue.
In addition, claims that animal markets were closed for the first time this year were denied, and it was reminded that a similar measure would be implemented in 2023.
“Estimates of economic damage do not reflect reality.”The Ministry stated that economic damage estimates made by some groups were based on hypothetical data and were intended to mislead the public.
The statement concluded with the statement, "Türkiye has the sufficient technical infrastructure, expert staff, and vaccine production capacity to combat foot-and-mouth disease. There will be no disruption to animal health services."
