Mahyas, an Ottoman tradition during the month of Ramadan, were hung in mosques in Istanbul. A mahya that reads "La ilahe illallah" was hung between the minarets of the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque and a mahya that says "Support goodness" was hung in the New Mosque in Eminönü just a few days before Ramadan.
'LET EVERYONE'S TABLE BE FULL'
As the weather darkened, the mahyas hung in mosques were lit. Those who saw the mahyas hung in mosques took many photos. Tourists who saw the mahya hung in the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque said, "We came from a brotherly country, Azerbaijan. May our Ramadan be auspicious, may each of us be given the chance to fast. May Allah give us strength and power."
Another tourist said, "May it be fruitful, may Allah not leave anyone without food this Ramadan. May everyone's table be full, may everyone break their fast as they wish."
Those who came to the front of Eminönü New Mosque took souvenir photos when they saw the mahyas hung between the two minarets.
