Konala and wheat harvest started in Silivri

The wheat and canola harvest has begun in the Gazitepe Neighborhood of the Silivri district of Istanbul. Istanbul Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Suat Parıldar and citizens attended the ceremony held before the harvest. Speaking at the ceremony, Parıldar stated that Silivri is not only one of the prominent districts of Istanbul but also of Türkiye in terms of agricultural production. Stating that they have established a sustainable and strategic production model in Istanbul in line with the production planning vision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Parıldar said, "The total planting area of wheat, barley, sunflower, canola, chickpeas, dry beans and forage crops included in the production planning in our province is 675,828 decares. This area corresponds to 90.5 percent of the total cultivated agricultural area of 746,139 decares in Istanbul. I am proud to state that this rate has reached an extremely high level of 96.7 percent in Silivri."
Noting that 135,753 tons of wheat will be produced in an area of 308,967 acres in Istanbul as of 2024, Parıldar explained that 59 percent of this, approximately 80 thousand tons, will be provided by Silivri. In terms of canola, he said that Silivri, which meets 75 percent of Istanbul's total production, is also the leader in this area with a production of 5,600 tons. Parıldar said, "For 2025, canola cultivation areas are expected to increase by 90 percent in Istanbul in general, reaching 40,907 acres. This increase is a reflection of the interest shown by our farmers and the effort in the field."
Parıldar, who stated that 390,377 acres of the approximately 868,850 acres of agricultural land, which constitutes 16 percent of Istanbul's surface area, are in Silivri, stated that the district alone meets more than 60 percent of field crop production in Istanbul. Also touching on the subject of agricultural supports, Parıldar said, "In 2024, we paid a total of 470.5 million TL in agricultural support to our farmers throughout Istanbul. 263.4 million TL of this amount was delivered to our producers in Silivri alone. This rate corresponds to approximately 60 percent of agricultural supports throughout Istanbul."
Parıldar, who made important warnings to producers in the fight against stubble fires, said, "In Arnavutköy, two stubble fires caused damage to 237 acres and in Silivri, approximately 100 acres. We have increased training and inspection activities in order to prevent such incidents. We strongly recommend our producers to have TARSİM insurance. This insurance system is the strongest precaution that can be taken against natural disasters."
