Chinese scientists gave birth to a cloned yak by Caesarean section
A cloned yak was born by Caesarean section at a yak breeding center in Damxung County, Xizang Autonomous Region, southwest China .
According to researchers, the calf, born on Thursday, weighed 33.5 kilograms (75 pounds), making it heavier than most yak calves. The calf, which has a completely black coat, was able to walk a day after birth and appeared to be in good health.
The cloning project, a joint effort between Zhejiang University, the Damxung County government, and the Xizang Autonomous Region Plateau Biology Institute, was launched in July 2023. Scientists successfully produced cloned yak using whole-genome selection and somatic cell cloning technologies.

Yaks, which live only on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, are not only the main source of livelihood for herding communities in the region but are also considered an indispensable part of the ecosystem.
