The sentence sought for the unlicensed driver who took the life of 18-year-old Kübra Sofioğlu has caused outrage among the family.

Kübra Sofioğlu, a 12th-grade Science High School student, died in a traffic accident in Diyarbakır on May 6 when she was struck by her father's car, a 17-year-old unlicensed driver named CG, who was speeding. The driver was arrested following the incident and an investigation into the incident has been concluded. UP TO 9 YEARS OF PRISONMENT REQUESTED According to Sabah newspaper, the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office requested a prison sentence of two to six years for CG on the charge of "causing death by negligence " under Article 85 of the Turkish Penal Code. Furthermore, pursuant to Article 22/3 of the Turkish Penal Code, a request was made to increase the sentence by half, finding that the crime was committed "by conscious negligence." Thus, the defendant was requested to be sentenced to up to nine years in prison. CG will be tried in the Juvenile High Criminal Court for "Causing the Death of a Person by Intentional Negligence." Kübra's older brother, Ali Sofioğlu, requested that the driver be convicted of intentional death, setting a precedent. In his statement, the defendant, CG, claimed he was traveling at 70-80 km/ h and that he swerved to the left when the car in front of him braked suddenly, hitting Sofioğlu. However, three of his friends in the car denied this claim, stating that he was speeding excessively and that they had warned him repeatedly. Camera footage obtained during the Public Prosecutor's investigation refuted the driver's claim. The footage revealed that CG was traveling at 145.4 kilometers per hour (90 mph) at the time of the incident.
