Yet another classic novel is headed to the screen (again). After Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility were green-lit for new adaptations, Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize–winning The Age of Innocence is next in line, as Netflix is currently developing a new limited series based on the book. (This won’t be the first time Wharton’s story has been adapted. Martin Scorsese directed the Oscar-winning 1993 film version, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Winona Ryder.)
Here’s everything we know so far about Netflix’s upcoming take on The Age of Innocence.
What is The Age of Innocence about? Here’s the official synopsis, per Netflix:
Based on Edith Wharton’s classic novel of forbidden love in 19th century New York, The Age Of Innocence is a passionate and heart-rending will-they/won’t-they love triangle exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity and love in all its forms. This fresh take is true to Wharton’s novel but will speak to a new generation as we traverse the ballrooms and bedrooms of these young people, asking the question what is love—and what is lust? And should we ultimately be driven by our heads or by our hearts?Who’s in the cast?
Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & the Six) will play Ellen Olenska; Kristine Froseth (The Buccaneers) will play May Welland; Ben Radcliffe (Anatomy of a Scandal) will play Newland Archer; and Margo Martindale (The Americans) will play Mrs. Manson-Mingott.
Official character descriptions are below:
- Ellen Olenska (Morrone) is May’s intelligent and independent cousin, who returns to New York after a failed marriage to Count Stanislas Olenski, a Polish nobleman. She is a free spirit who is playful, smart, and strong-willed, yet carries conflict and guilt surrounding her new position in society.
- May Welland (Froseth) is a kind and genuine woman who is a product of her class in society. She is traditional, a rule follower, and a believer in the status quo, but not without rebellion.
- Newland Archer (Radcliffe) is a handsome, progressive, and intelligent society gentleman. He craves a deeper and more passionate connection to the world and someone in it.
- Mrs. Manson-Mingott (Martindale) is May and Ellen’s grandmother, who is entertaining, scurrilous, defiant, capricious, and stubborn.
Emma Frost (Shameless, The White Princess) will serve as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Shannon Murphy (Dying for Sex) will direct the first three episodes and also serve as an executive producer. Other directors will include Lisa Bruhlmann (Killing Eve) and Natalia Leite (The Handmaid’s Tale).
