Pat Spillane Explains Why Andy Moran Is The Man To Fix Long Standing Mayo Issue

Mayo would being their long hunt for a new manager to an end earlier this month, with it being announced that Andy Moran was set to lead the county for the 2026 season.
The process to reach that point was a well publicised one, with Kevin McStay's controversial departure quickly followed by plenty of speculation as to who would be his successor. It was at one point suggested that Mayo would look outside the county for their next appointment, although they would eventually turn to one of their former players.
Moran has developed an impressive coaching CV in recent years. Having had a promising spell in charge of Leitrim, he would go on to play a key role as Monaghan's attack coach in 2025.
It will be hoped that he can use that recent experience to boost Mayo's prospects next season.

Pat Spillane Feels Andy Moran Is The Man To Fix Big Mayo IssueMayo have a talented squad, but it is fair to say that they have not met expectations in recent seasons. The county have not won a provincial title in four years and have also failed to make an All-Ireland quarter-final in the last two campaigns.
A lack of firepower up front has been among their biggest issues, although Pat Spillane feels that they may not have the right man in charge to solve that problem.
Writing in the Sunday World, the Kerry legend suggested that Moran's exploits with Monaghan would provide hope that he can fix what has been a faltering Mayo attack.
Andy Moran is coming in and he’s going to be a welcome breath of fresh air.
Forward failings have been Mayo’s Achilles heel for years, but he’s possibly the best and the most astute forward coach in the country.
Over the last few years, Mayo have been unsure of whether they want a kicking game, whether they want a running game. Andy will bring an identity and a plan and will improve their forward play.
Andy Moran certainly knows what it takes to become a top class forward at inter-county level, although how quickly he will get his message across to the current Mayo group remains to be seen.
In any case, he is sure to get plenty of backing within the county as he seeks to return them to the top table of Gaelic football.
