Voetballegende David Beckham zei dat hij zeer vereerd is nu hij is geridderd op de King's Birthday Honours List.
De ex-speler van Engeland en Manchester United , die in 2003 de Orde van het Britse Rijk (OBE) ontving, zei "enorm trots" te zijn op de onderscheiding voor zijn verdiensten voor de sport en het goede doel. Sir David voegt zich bij de 1215 genomineerden op de erelijst, waaronder The Who-zanger Roger Daltrey, Hollywood-icoon Gary Oldman, tv-legendes Claudia Winkleman en Tess Daly, en tienerdartensensatie Luke Littler.
Ook worden honderden alledaagse helden geëerd, waaronder activisten tegen messencriminaliteit, een 11-jarige fondsenwerver en lokale voorvechters in het hele land.
Sir David, die al twintig jaar ambassadeur van goede wil is voor Unicef en onlangs zijn vijftigste verjaardag vierde, zei dankbaar te zijn voor de erkenning. In een verklaring zei het icoon: "Ik groeide op in Oost-Londen, met ouders en grootouders die zo patriottisch en trots waren om Brits te zijn. Ik had me nooit kunnen voorstellen dat ik zo'n eervolle eer zou ontvangen. Voor mijn land mogen spelen en aanvoerder zijn, was het grootste voorrecht van mijn carrière en letterlijk een jongensdroom die uitkwam."
Hij voegde eraan toe: "Buiten het veld heb ik het geluk gehad om Groot-Brittannië wereldwijd te mogen vertegenwoordigen en samen te werken met fantastische organisaties die gemeenschappen in nood ondersteunen en de volgende generatie inspireren. Ik ben zo blij dat ik dit werk mag doen en ik ben dankbaar dat ik erkenning krijg voor werk dat me zoveel voldoening geeft. Het zal even duren voordat het nieuws tot me doordringt, maar ik ben enorm trots en het is zo'n emotioneel moment om met mijn familie te delen."
Keir Starmer zei: "De Birthday Honours List van dit jaar is een krachtige herinnering aan de buitengewone toewijding, compassie en dienstbaarheid die in elke uithoek van ons land aanwezig zijn. Van gemeenschapskampioenen tot culturele iconen, elke ontvanger weerspiegelt het beste van Groot-Brittannië. Ik wil hen allen van harte feliciteren en bedanken."

Alison Madgin, wier dochter dodelijk werd neergestoken, zei dat ze in tranen uitbarstte toen ze het nieuws van haar MBE (Britse Burgerlijke Stand) hoorde. De 60-jarige zei dat ze "verbijsterd" was toen ze samen met haar 34-jarige dochter Carly Barrett op de lijst van ereplaatsen voor de verjaardag van de koning werd geplaatst vanwege haar inzet voor de preventie van messengeweld.
Alisons dochter Samantha, 18, werd in 2007 vermoord in Wallsend, North Tyneside, nadat ze was neergestoken toen ze probeerde een vechtpartij te sussen. Haar familie richtte Samantha's nalatenschap op om jongeren te informeren over de gevaren van messencriminaliteit. Carly vertelde The Mirror : "Al ons werk doen we nooit voor erkenning. We doen het omdat we gepassioneerd zijn om die verandering teweeg te brengen."

De rouwende moeder Pooja Kanda is ook onderscheiden voor haar inspanningen om messencriminaliteit te bestrijden, nadat haar 16-jarige zoon Ronan op een steenworp afstand van zijn huis met een ninjazwaard werd vermoord. Ministers hebben de belofte nageleefd om de Ronan's Law in te voeren – vernoemd naar de tiener die in 2022 in Wolverhampton werd vermoord – om de dodelijke wapens te verbieden. Mevrouw Kanda zei: "De dag dat ik over de OBE hoorde, hield ik zijn foto vast. Ik heb tranen gelaten. Ik weet dat de OBE op mijn naam staat, maar dit is voor mijn zoon."
Nour Norris ontvangt ook een OBE (Orde van het Britse Rijk) voor haar inzet voor het voorkomen van geweld tegen vrouwen en meisjes. Ze heeft onvermoeibaar campagne gevoerd voor een wetswijziging ter nagedachtenis aan haar nichtje Raneem Oudeh en haar zus Khaola Saleem, die omkwamen na een reeks schokkende mislukkingen. Eerder dit jaar lanceerden ministers de wet van Raneem om specialisten in huiselijk geweld te integreren in meldkamers van 999 en de manier waarop de politie met slachtoffers van misbruik omgaat te verbeteren.

Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Yvette Cooper vertelde The Mirror: "Voor de meesten van ons is het gelukkig onmogelijk om ons voor te stellen hoe het zou voelen om een familielid te verliezen door een geweldsdaad. Maar denk eens aan de moed en kracht die nodig zijn om dat verlies te dragen en je vervolgens in te zetten om de levens van andere mensen te redden, zodat families die je nooit zult ontmoeten diezelfde pijn niet hoeven te doorstaan." Ze voegde eraan toe: "Tijdens de King's Birthday Honours worden een aantal van deze personen terecht erkend voor hun werk, waaronder twee vrouwen die een persoonlijke inspiratiebron voor mij zijn geweest.
Pooja Kanda, die campagne voerde voor een verbod op ninjazwaarden en de online verkoop van messen aan tieners aanpakte ter nagedachtenis aan haar zoon Ronan, en Nour Norris, die zich inzette voor de plaatsing van specialisten in huiselijk geweld in 999-meldkamers na de moord op haar zus Khaola en haar nichtje Raneem.
Tv-presentatrice Tess Daly huilde toen ze de brief opende waarin stond dat ze benoemd zou worden tot Lid in de Orde van het Britse Rijk (MBE) voor haar verdiensten voor de omroep. De 56-jarige is gehuldigd, en haar Strictly Come Dancing -copresentatrice Claudia Winkleman is ook gehuldigd als MBE in de King's Birthday Honours. Maar het had allemaal vreselijk mis kunnen gaan voor Tess, want de brief was bijna niet op tijd aangekomen om te accepteren.
Tess zei: "Dit was echt de grootste verrassing van mijn leven. Ik denk niet dat ik al met beide benen op de grond sta, ik had het niet zien aankomen en het was er bijna niet van gekomen, omdat de brief naar het verkeerde adres was gestuurd."

En gelukkig vond iemand heel aardig me. En toen ik hem kreeg, had ik nog maar, ik denk dat het twee of drie dagen was om hem te accepteren. Er is een deadline voor acceptatie. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat ik zo'n prachtige prijs nooit zou willen accepteren. Maar natuurlijk deed ik dat wel.
Co-host Claudia van Strictly zei dat ze "ongelooflijk dankbaar" was voor de eer en voegde eraan toe: "Ik ga een hoed kopen en neem mijn moeder mee. Ik heb enorm veel geluk en ga het met Tess vieren door een paso doble te doen."
De tienerdartsensatie Luke Littler en de nummer één van de wereld, Luke Humphries, worden vandaag in het zonnetje gezet. De 18-jarige – bijgenaamd 'the Nuke' – werd in januari PDC World Darts Champion – 12 maanden nadat hij verloor van Humphries. Dit gebeurt terwijl het duo – beiden onderscheiden met een MBE voor hun verdiensten voor de dartswereld – zich voorbereidt om het Engelse team te leiden tijdens de World Cup of Darts dit weekend in Frankfurt, Duitsland.

Sarah Virginia Wade, de voormalige Britse tenniskampioene die in 1977 Wimbledon won, ontvangt eveneens een CBE (College of British British Tennis Association) voor haar verdiensten voor de sport. Eerder ontving ze een OBE (Orde van het Britse Rijk). De Engelse voetbalster Rachel Daly ontvangt een MBE (Military British Tennis Association) voor haar verdiensten voor het American Football.
Rugby league-legende Sir Billy Boston, 90, staat ook op de lijst. Hij werd eerder deze week – voorafgaand aan de officiële publicatie van de lijst – vanwege gezondheidsproblemen geridderd door King Charles Buckingham Palace in Buckingham Palace.

Het werd onthuld dat Sir Billy, die 478 try's scoorde in 488 wedstrijden voor Wigan nadat hij in 1953 de overstap maakte van rugby union, in 2016 aan vasculaire dementie leed. Premier Keir Starmer zei dinsdag ook dat het een "historische fout" was dat nog nooit eerder een rugby league-speler tot ridder was geslagen.

Veteraan William Irwin is met zijn 106 jaar de oudste persoon op de King's Birthday Honours List. Hij ontving een BEM voor zijn verdiensten voor de gemeenschap in Coleraine, County Londonderry, en is een van de drie ontvangers van deze onderscheiding in de afgelopen tien jaar op 106-jarige leeftijd. In 1988 hielp hij bij de oprichting van de Coleraine Probus Club, een club voor gepensioneerden uit verschillende gemeenschappen.
Carmela Chillery-Watson, 11, is tevens de jongste persoon ooit die een MBE heeft ontvangen. Carmela uit Dorset heeft LMNA congenitale spierdystrofie - een progressieve spierafbrekende aandoening die haar beweging, hart en longen aantast.
Ze heeft meer dan £400.000 opgehaald voor Muscular Dystrophy UK door uitdagingen te voltooien. Ze zei: "Ik ben gewoon heel erg blij en verrast dat ik deze eer krijg. Het is ongelooflijk."
Carmela's moeder Lucy Chillery-Watson zei dat ze "barstensvol trots" was dat haar dochter een MBE (Military British Military Institute) was geworden. "Vanaf haar geboorte toonde ze ware veerkracht en vastberadenheid - ze groeide op met de ene na de andere gezondheidsproblemen", voegde ze eraan toe. "Ze maakt een enorm verschil in de wereld."
Voormalig Tory-minister Penny Mordaunt , die zich twee keer kandidaat stelde voor het leiderschap van de Conservatieve Partij, is zaterdag uitgeroepen tot dame op de King's Birthday Honours List. Het voormalige Tory-parlementslid, dat haar zetel verloor bij de verkiezingen van vorig jaar, zag haar aanzien toenemen door haar rol als Lord President of the Council tijdens de kroning van koning Karel III in 2023 in Westminster Abbey. Het was de eerste keer dat deze functie door een vrouw werd vervuld.
Ze zei: "Het is fijn om op deze manier gewaardeerd te worden, en ik ben me er zeer van bewust dat alles wat ik ooit heb bereikt, tot stand is gekomen met de hulp en inzet van anderen. Daarom ben ik vandaag op veel vlakken heel dankbaar."

Labour-parlementslid Chi Onwurah, voorzitter van de Commissie Wetenschap en Technologie van het Lagerhuis, zei ook dat ze "totaal overweldigd en verrast" was om tot dame benoemd te worden. Dame Chi zei: "Ik ben opgegroeid in een sociale huurwoning in Newcastle, in een eenoudergezin. Ik heb er nooit aan gedacht om tot dame benoemd te worden, zoals je je kunt voorstellen."
Haar collega Mark Tami, sinds 2001 Labour-parlementslid voor Alyn en Deeside en sinds 2010 ook fractieleider, zei dat hij "geschokt" was toen hij een ridderorde kreeg. Ook voormalig Conservatief minister van Volksgezondheid Maria Caulfield, die benoemd wordt tot CBE, zei "zeer verrast" te zijn door de onderscheiding.
