Kim Kardashian fails the bar exam – now her only option is a TV role.
Actress and fashion influencer Kim Kardashian dreams of becoming a lawyer like her father. She recently failed the bar exam in California. She's taking it in stride, as her Instagram post proves.
Just a few weeks ago, Kim Kardashian surprised everyone by announcing that she had passed her bar exam. To be perfectly prepared, the 45-year-old announced that she had studied with ChatGPT and hoped to be admitted to the bar in two weeks. Now, the actress and influencer has had to sheepishly admit that her dream is on hold, at least for now. Kardashian failed the California bar exam, she confessed to her 354 million Instagram followers.
She failed the bar exam, but she won't give up. Kardashian, who plays a lawyer in Ryan Murphy's new series "All's Fair," wrote: "Well... I'm not a lawyer yet, I'm just playing a very well-dressed one on TV. Six years into law school, I'm still giving it my all until I pass the bar exam. No shortcuts, no quitting—just more studying and more determination. Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me so far. Failing is not failure—it's motivation. I was so close to passing the exam, and this just motivates me even more."
The mother of four recently appeared on the "Graham Norton Show" and spoke about her goals as a lawyer: "Maybe in ten years I'll give up my role as Kim K. and become a trial lawyer," she said. "That's my true wish."
Kardashian wants to follow in her father's footsteps. Robert Kardashian was a well-known criminal defense attorney. He was part of the defense team in the 1995 murder trial of football star O.J. Simpson. Robert Kardashian died in 2003.
His daughter's decision to begin law school was preceded by a special event. On May 30, 2018, Kardashian visited the Oval Office of the White House at the invitation of the US President. She spoke with Donald Trump about prison reform and sentencing. During the meeting, she advocated for the pardon of a 63-year-old woman serving a life sentence for drug offenses. A few days later, Trump commuted the woman's sentence; she now models for Kardashian's clothing line, Skims.
In an interview with Vogue in April 2019, Kardashian announced that she would be undertaking a four-year internship with a lawyer in San Francisco. Her goal was to pass the bar exam herself. She wanted to advocate for incarcerated individuals who, in her view, had long since repaid their debt to society.
She began her law studies in 2020. In December 2021, after three failed attempts, she passed the first-year exam, the so-called "Baby Bar" exam. She officially graduated in 2025, and in March of that year, she took the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE). She still had her final exams to go. Kardashian says, "I always want to evolve, stay curious, and grow, and I want to see where that takes me."
Her emphasis on not taking "shortcuts" stems from her admission that she tried several learning tricks that didn't work for her. She recently revealed that only ChatGPT was a method that helped. "I use it for legal advice. When I need the answer to a question, I take a picture of it and paste it there," Kardashian explained her learning strategy.
At the beginning of the year, Kim Kardashian hosted a celebration at the Beverly Hills Hotel with friends marking the completion of her legal traineeship. Her mentor, human rights lawyer Jessica Jackson, praised her progress, calling it "one of the most inspiring legal careers" she had ever seen. In her speech, the 43-year-old commended Kardashian: "Six years ago, Kim entered this program with nothing but an unyielding desire to fight for justice. No law school lectures, no impractical shortcuts, just determination. And a mountain of books to read."
The billionaire will now have to read these legal texts more carefully so that she can improve her performance on her second attempt at the bar exam. The official exam results will be announced on Sunday.
