Suitcase test 2025: Which models are our VOGUE favorites and how to find the perfect suitcase

Whether it's a short trip, a long-distance journey, or a business meeting in another city – the right suitcase often makes all the difference. But what really matters? Those who travel frequently know: a good suitcase saves stress. It has to be practical, easy to maneuver, offer enough storage space, and survive many trips unscathed. But with so many models available, choosing the right one is often difficult.

Whether you're looking for a soft-shell or hard-shell suitcase, carry-on or check-in luggage, you'll find our test results for the best suitcase models here. If you're still looking for your perfect travel companion, you can read here which model is right for you and what to look for when buying a suitcase.

With these 5 suitcases you are ready for your next trip

Two models stood out in our comparison: For hand luggage, we recommend the "Essential" suitcase from Nortvi – stylish, exceptionally durable, and fully recyclable. If you need more space, the "H6 Essential" from Horizn Studios is the perfect choice. This suitcase is the best according to Stiftung Warentest

"Essential Trunk Plus" by Rimowa

Dimensions: 80 x 41 x 37 cm (101 liters)

In Stiftung Warentest's comparison of hard-shell and soft-shell suitcases, one model in particular stood out: Rimowa's Essential Trunk Plus received the highest rating among several hard-shell models. With a test score of 2.2, it impressed with a combination of sophisticated features, high stability, and iconic design. Its ease of use, versatile interior, and material durability were particularly highlighted. It's hardly surprising that Rimowa was also one of the favorites in our own test. While the model is in the upper segment at around €1,190, you get a piece of luggage that should remain a loyal companion for many years (especially since Rimowa offers a lifetime warranty on its suitcases, just in case something does break).

Since the Stiftung Warentest test is no longer up to date, we have also done our own research and comparisons – and present our personal suitcase favorites for the travel year 2025 below.

Suitcase test 2025: This is how we tested

Choosing the right suitcase can be a real challenge – after all, there's a seemingly endless selection. But instead of simply grabbing the next best thing, you should specifically look for a suitcase that perfectly suits your travel style. Weight and material are particularly important. Lightweight models made of robust polycarbonate or durable nylon offer a good basis for comfortable travel. The design of the wheels shouldn't be underestimated either: Suitcases with four sturdy wheels are particularly easy and effortless to move, even if your luggage is a bit heavy. Other practical extras such as a TSA lock, adjustable telescopic handles, and intelligent interior dividers can significantly increase the comfort and functionality of a suitcase.

In our 2025 suitcase test, we tested the best models for you and provide an overview of our hand-picked favorites. Whether for your next weekend trip or a longer journey, you'll find the perfect suitcase here that will significantly enhance your travel experience.

The best hand luggage suitcases in comparison

Traveling efficiently and stylishly – this is best achieved with the right carry-on suitcase. Especially for short-haul flights or weekend trips, the rule of thumb is: pack as little as possible, but as much as necessary. A good carry-on suitcase helps you limit yourself to the essentials while still not missing anything.
