EU states agree on new sanctions package against Russia

Diplomats reported on the planned measures on Wednesday following a vote in the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the 27 member states. The sanctions are to be formally adopted at a meeting of EU foreign ministers next Tuesday (May 20, 2025) and will take effect immediately.
This is the 17th sanctions package since the war began in 2022. The last sanctions against Russia were adopted in February, on the third anniversary of the war against Ukraine. They primarily included new trade restrictions and measures against Russian media, but also included measures against the shadow fleet.
