Following the classification of the AfD as a confirmed extremist party by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the Greens and the Left Party are calling for an end to state party funding for the AfD.

"Democracy must not allow itself to be used to finance its own abolition with funds from the state treasury," said Clara Bünger, domestic policy expert for the Left Party, to the "Tagesspiegel" (Monday edition). The Bundestag member believes the legal framework for a successful proceeding before the Federal Constitutional Court is in place. "The Bundestag must now have the courage to initiate such proceedings," said Bünger. Marcel Emmerich, the domestic policy spokesperson for the Green Party's parliamentary group in the Bundestag, expressed similar views. "Cutting state funding would be an option for sanctions, but that too would be subject to very stringent conditions," he told the Tagesspiegel newspaper. He also called for a cross-party push for a ban on the AfD to protect democracy.

"This will allow the Federal Constitutional Court to review the unconstitutionality of the AfD. This instrument is part of our resilient democracy and must now be used consistently," said Emmerich. The domestic policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Alexander Throm, took a more cautious approach: "The AfD needs to be approached critically in every respect," he told the Tagesspiegel newspaper. However, the party's state funding doesn't need to be cut. "As long as the AfD participates in elections, it is entitled to the corresponding state subsidies. But nothing more," Throm said. He is also skeptical about a ban: "The AfD must be fought politically."
