|Then-Chancellor Merkel's support for the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline sparked fierce criticism. The opposition called on Prime Minister Merz to relentlessly address the mistakes of the CDU's Russia policy.
Following new findings regarding Angela Merkel's Russia policy, opposition politicians are pushing for a committee of inquiry that could investigate her approval of the sale of German gas storage facilities to the Russian Gazprom group and her involvement in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project. "Without serious parliamentary clarification, the questions that remain unanswered today will not be resolved," Green Party leader Felix Banaszak told the Süddeutsche Zeitung . "My inquiries to the Chancellery and the Finance Ministry have been answered with extremely poor, unsatisfactory, and obviously incomplete answers." Banaszak said there was a reason why he called for a parliamentary committee of inquiry last year.
