Producer prices for agricultural products slightly higher in March

In February 2025, the rate of change compared to the same month of the previous year was +2.7 percent, and in January 2025, it was +2.2 percent. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Wednesday, producer prices for agricultural products fell by 0.3 percent in March 2025 compared to the previous month, February 2025. Compared to the same month last year, prices for plant and animal products developed in opposite directions in March 2025, as in previous months. Prices for plant products fell by 5.5 percent compared to March 2024, while prices for animals and animal products rose by 6.3 percent.

Compared to the previous month, plant products also became cheaper in March 2025 (-2.6 percent), whereas animal products became more expensive (+1.3 percent). The 5.5 percent year-on-year price decline for plant products is due, among other things, to lower prices for table potatoes. These were 38.4 percent lower in March 2025 than in March 2024. In February 2025, the year-on-year change was -36.1 percent, and in January 2025, it was -37.0 percent. Compared to the previous month of February 2025, table potato prices were unchanged. Producer prices for fruit were 20.5 percent higher in March 2025 than a year earlier. Significant price increases were seen, among other things, for dessert apples, with prices rising by 22.9 percent. Vegetable prices fell slightly by 0.1 percent year-on-year, with lettuce (-8.2 percent) and brassicas (-3.1 percent) experiencing particular price declines. Price increases, however, were observed for cucumbers and tomatoes, among others, which increased by 15.6 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively, year-on-year. Grain prices were 17.3 percent more expensive in March 2025 compared to March 2024 (February 2025: +16.3 percent compared to the same month of the previous year). Wine prices also increased in March 2025 (+0.8 percent). Prices for commercial crops overall were 7.8 percent lower in March 2025 than a year earlier. The commercial crop rapeseed rose by 14.7 percent in March 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year. Prices for fodder crops continued to decline in March 2025, with a change rate of -12.7 percent compared to the same month of the previous year (February 2025: -10.1 percent). The 6.3 percent year-on-year price increase for animals and animal products is due, among other things, to higher milk prices. The milk price in March 2025 was 17.9 percent higher than in the same month of the previous year (February 2025: +18.6 percent compared to the same month of the previous year). Milk prices also rose (+0.4 percent) compared to February 2025. Egg prices increased by 3.8 percent in March 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year (February 2025: -0.4 percent compared to February 2024). Animal prices were 1.8 percent lower in March 2025 than in March 2024 (February 2025: -1.3 percent compared to the same month last year). This was primarily due to the 21.2 percent drop in prices for slaughter pigs. Prices for cattle rose by 33.4 percent. Poultry prices were 7.6 percent higher in March 2025 than in March 2024. This was primarily due to the 8.8 percent price increase for chicken. Prices for other poultry (ducks and turkeys) rose by 5.6 percent year-on-year, according to the authority.
