Serbia and Srebrenica: From heroic deed to crime and back

Ten years ago, Aleksandar Vučić traveled to Srebrenica to apologize to the victims. Today, Serbia's president speaks differently. There's a reason for that.
It's a good rule of thumb that, when remembering crimes, we should first listen to the stories of the victims. But in the case of the Srebrenica genocide, in which more than 7,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed on July 11, 1995—according to official authorities in Sarajevo, the death toll is as high as 8,372—it is certainly instructive to also take a look at the perpetrators, their supporters, and their apologists. Especially when such a look is not focused solely on the 30th anniversary of the crime, but also considers earlier events.
