Leonel: The blackout at AILA is an international discredit to the Dominican Republic.

Former Dominican Republic President and leader of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) coalition, Leonel Fernández , expressed his regret this Monday over the power outage at Las Américas International Airport (AILA), saying it seriously harmed the country's image in the eyes of the international community.
"I honestly confess that at this moment I view with great sadness the terrible setback we are experiencing in the Dominican Republic ," Fernández said during an event in Manhattan.
- In a press release, the former president described the incident at the airport as a painful blow to the country's reputation .
"That the José Francisco Peña Gómez International Airport of the Americas was affected today by a prolonged blackout particularly hurts my soul, because what is happening is the international discredit of the Dominican Republic . We cannot allow that," he warned.
Fernández added that it is unacceptable that, after decades of progress , failures of this magnitude occur at a strategic facility .
"It's unacceptable that in our country, after so much effort and so much progress , a blackout occurs at the airport, and that the blackout continues, and the cause of the blackout is unknown," he said.
Swearing-in of new membersThe remarks were made during the swearing-in of new members of the People's Force in New York.
Fernández maintained that the enthusiasm aroused by the People's Force is a response to the current government's exhaustion and the confidence in its political proposal.
"All of this is what's driving this enthusiasm around the People's Force , because with their presence, with their swearing-in, and with the increasing number of people joining our organization, it's saying that in 2028, they're on their way out," he proclaimed.
During his speech, the former president highlighted the importance of Dominicans abroad , both in the United States and other countries, and the need to link them directly to national development .
"To achieve this strategic alliance that will allow us to move at the same pace in education, health, ecological, environmental, technological, and cultural matters, we will create the Ministry for Dominicans Abroad," he announced.
He explained that this organization's mission will be to ensure that the more than two million Dominicans in the diaspora feel represented and actively participate in the nation's public policies.
