Sheinbaum calls for the cancellation of the 15 billion peso increase to the Supreme Court's budget.

On a cool morning at the National Palace, Claudia Sheinbaum revisited one of the most controversial topics in recent months: the 2026 budget. She firmly asserted that the country does not need a 15 billion peso increase for the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), approved by its previous members.
The president, true to her vision of republican austerity , explained that the new composition of the Supreme Court has already expressed a willingness to reduce salaries and adopt a rational spending plan. Therefore, she maintained, it is logical that this increase be repealed.
Sheinbaum was clear: health and education are priorities . Instead of increasing the Supreme Court's budget, those 15 billion pesos could boost medical programs, build hospitals, and strengthen public schools.
He also stressed the importance of public investment , a driving force that, according to his assessment, has helped boost the economy in recent years. His message was forceful:
“Mexico needs every peso to be used to benefit the people.”
The debate won't be easy. Every year, the budget debate in Congress becomes a political standoff. However, Sheinbaum is confident that the legislative majority will support her proposal.
In this context, the president insisted that the budget should be a reflection of social priorities , not an institutional privilege. The "people versus elite" narrative once again emerges as a central theme in her speech.
In parallel with the budget debate, Sheinbaum cleared up doubts about another sensitive issue: customs in Mexico . She confirmed that there will be no changes in its operation: the Ministry of National Defense will remain in charge of land customs, and the Ministry of the Navy will continue to manage maritime customs.
This model, championed by the previous government, seeks to guarantee security and transparency in trade flows, key pillars of the border control and anti-smuggling strategy.
The discussion on the 2026 budget is seen as one of the first major challenges of the Sheinbaum administration. If the increase to the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN) is canceled, it will not only send a political message of austerity, but will also redirect essential resources to strengthen social investment .
The outcome, which will occur in Congress in the coming months, will set the tone for the relationship between branches of government and determine whether the commitment to Republican austerity remains a cornerstone of Mexican politics.
