It's official, the Linky meter will be mandatory for everyone on this date

This time it's for real. Or not, the "anti-Linky" crowd will tell you. The much-maligned Enedis electricity meter (although 95% of French people are now equipped with one), which is supposed to save you up to 10% on your annual bill if you use it correctly (real-time consumption monitoring on the app, viewing the devices that cost you the most, etc.), will be definitively mandatory from August 1st in all French homes that depend on the supply of this energy. We warned you: those who refuse will have to pay a bi-monthly penalty if they continue to refuse its installation .
An obligation validated by the courts despite complaintsIt is a court decision that has definitively validated the obligation to accept the installation of a Linky meter. The decision, taken in April 2025, is visible on the website of the National Energy Mediator , as well as the resulting case law. " Two users refused the installation of a Linky communicating meter on their property. They sued Enedis to prevent this installation. The Court of Appeal rejected their request, a decision confirmed by the Court of Cassation. For the first time, the Court of Cassation takes a position on the obligation for users not to obstruct the installation of the LINKY meter on their property and, approving a decision of the Paris Court of Appeal of June 2, 2023, judges, by a decision of April 9, 2025, in a formulation of principle, after recalling the texts and contracts, that":
"Users cannot object to the installation of a LINKY meter on their property, which is a result of the exercise by Enedis of its prerogatives as manager of the public electricity network, made mandatory for users by law and the terms of the regulated contract."Two million French people refuse the installation of the Linky meter
Will they refuse for long before real sanctions are imposed? Because, apart from our few compatriots for whom the installation of a Linky meter is technically impossible at the moment, the additional cost charged by Enedis, the "reading fees," will be very real starting this summer. Indeed, Capital points out that a tolerance was previously applied to owners of an old meter who took their reading once a year and communicated it to the supplier. This tolerance has ended. As of August 1 , customers who are still resistant but who inform Enedis or make an appointment for a reading will have to pay an additional €6.48 excluding VAT every 2 months on their bill, or €38.88 excluding VAT per year. Those who refuse the installation and turn a deaf ear will have to pay an additional 4.14 euros excluding tax (4.14 + 6.48 euros) at the same rate, or 63.72 euros per year.
And the excuse of harmful waves emitted by Linky no longer holds . TF1 thus repeats the conclusion made by ANSES (French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety) in 2023: "exposures are comparable to other domestic electronic devices such as multimedia device chargers or induction hobs."
