While Renault could produce drones, car manufacturers are taking the defense turn

Will the "war economy" desired by Emmanuel Macron since his June 2022 speech reach a symbolic milestone? Renault announced on June 8 that it had been contacted by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces with a view to producing military drones. " Discussions have taken place, but no decision has been made at this stage because we are awaiting clarification on this project from the ministry," the car manufacturer said, without giving further details. Renault would be partnering with a French SME. According to Franceinfo , the planned production lines would be located in Ukraine, "a few dozen or hundreds of kilometers from the front."

This information confirms the statements made by the French Minister of the Armed Forces a few hours earlier. Interviewed on June 6 on LCI , Sébastien Lecornu announced "a completely unprecedented partnership where a large company producing French cars (...) will join forces with a French defense SME to equip production lines in Ukraine to be able to produce drones." These devices, the type of which has not been specified, will primarily be used by the Ukrainian army "but we will also allow our own French armies to benefit from them to have permanent tactical and operational training that reflects the reality" of the conflict in Ukraine, Sébastien Lecornu added.
