Justice: The shock proposal of the Minister of Justice

The Minister of Justice is proposing the expansion of the "guilty plea" option, a proposal that is not popular with the magistrates' unions.
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin wants to ease the backlog of assize courts and criminal courts. To achieve this, he announced in a letter addressed to magistrates on Monday, May 12, that he intends to extend the "guilty plea" procedure to felonies. Until now, it has only been used for minor offenses. This procedure would allow the perpetrator of a crime such as rape, robbery, or even homicide to be tried within a few hours, if they first admit their guilt.
"Crimes are the most serious acts; on the contrary, it takes time to hear the parties, simply so that the court has a perfect understanding of the accused's personality in order to make the most appropriate decision," explains the Secretary General of the Judiciary. To implement this measure, the Ministry announces that a bill will be proposed at the end of the year.
