Last Saturday and Sunday, the city hosted the 46th Jerzy Janicki National Festival of Urban Folklore Bands, traditionally organized by the Cultural Center in Przemyśl.
It is worth emphasizing that the Przemyśl festival is the oldest and most famous event of this type in Poland. In the past, backyard bands were very popular in the landscape of many Polish cities, and most notably in pre-war Lviv and Warsaw, where almost every street had its own band. Often, street performances by amateur bands were the only favorite entertainment for residents, especially in poorer districts. Today, this form of music-making is disappearing, as evidenced by the small number of active bands, while twenty-something years ago, almost thirty of them came to the festival in Przemyśl. Therefore, an important task of such festivals is to protect and cultivate the tradition of urban folklore and present the work of backyard bands, for which the organizers deserve praise.
This year, only six bands applied for the 46th edition of the festival. The jury consisting of Dariusz Baszak (chairman), Małgorzata Pruchnik-Chołka and Piotr Malec, after listening to and watching all the performances, awarded the first prize to the band "Z Golesz Orkiestra" from Sulejów. The second prize was awarded to the band "Z nasze Miasteczka" from Czerwonka-Leszczany. Two equal third prizes were awarded to the band "Śląskie Bajery" from Ornontowice and the band "Szczuny z Sulęcinka". Two distinctions were awarded to: the band "Czarny Salceson" from Siennica Nadolna and the "Lwowska Kapela Podwórkowa "Ta Joj" from Przemyśl. Congratulations to the winners.
