– Definitely. Poland was under partition. However, Galicia had a lot of autonomy, so establishing such a society was easier than anywhere else. Initially, it was the Society for the Beautification of the City of Przemyśl. People met and wanted to do something for the city. They took special care of greenery. The members of the society not only organized a small zoo on Castle Hill, but also planted 1,250 trees, which is why, for example, our beautiful park was created. They organized charity balls, concerts in the park gazebo. They used the money they collected to create alleys or buy park benches. They took care of the patriotic elements of the city, carried out the conservation of monuments, and organized celebrations. Few people probably know that the mayor of the city, Aleksander Dworski, was the president of the society. That was how it was until the outbreak of World War II. Then the government in Poland changed. The city authorities did not like the name of the society, because it reminded them of the Sanation trend. A great role in the society's activities was played by lawyers and doctors who were of Jewish origin. They wanted to invest in the city. They were Polish and local patriots. We remember them all the time. I was the organizer of an ecumenical prayer at the Jewish cemetery at Słowackiego Street. Three denominations met there: Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic and Judaic. Just as it had functioned in harmony in Przemyśl for years...
