And that's a surprise. There is a tax for gifts received for communion

Communions in Poland usually take place in the spring – from the end of April to June, but most often in May, which is traditionally considered the "Marian month".
First Holy Communion is one of the most important events in the spiritual life of a young Catholic. It is then that children receive the Body of Christ for the first time in the form of the Eucharist and consciously join the Christian community. From then on – as St. Augustine said – they will “go to God not by road but by love”. It is also a time of gifts and reports to the Tax Offices .
How much should I put in an envelope or transfer to my account? The main guideline for guests and godparents is the price for a "plate", i.e. the amount that the child's parents pay for each invited guest during a communion party in a restaurant. According to data already available on the Internet, a communion party in a restaurant for 30 guests costs around PLN 10,000. As you can easily calculate, this is approximately PLN 340 per plate, without cake, alcohol and other cakes, which in 2025 raise the price to around PLN 600.
In 2025, by bank transfer or "in an envelope" it is appropriate to put from PLN 500 to PLN 1,500. Some declare a larger sum - PLN 2,000. This usually applies to godparents. Regardless of the form, a gift is simply a donation. And there are taxes to pay on a gift, although their amount depends on the value of the gift and the degree of relationship.
Informal donations create unnecessary problemsThe definition of a donation is "the free transfer of something of value, such as money, jewelry, electronics, or other valuable items."
Tax offices are constantly looking for donations made informally, without following the proper procedures – such as communion. And they have the right to analyze donations from the last five years and for that time you have to keep the documentation concerning them at home.
Failure to report exceeding the limit within six months may result not only in the maximum tax rate, but also in additional penalties. And they can be easily avoided. Infotuba.pl wrote about how to calculate tax on a gift and how to complete the formalities .
