Massive Russian attack on Kyiv. Poland scrambles fighters

Russia carried out a massive airstrike on Kiev on the night of May 24-25 using missiles and drones, Ukrainian authorities report. The Polish Ministry of National Defense reported scrambling fighters to potentially secure Polish airspace.

Kiev was attacked on the night from Saturday to Sunday by at least a dozen Russian drones, the remains of one of them fell on a residential building, starting a fire, seven people were injured - said Timur Tkachenko, head of the military administration of the Ukrainian capital.

"There are at least 12 enemy drones in the airspace around the capital, and more are coming. A difficult night is ahead of us. We are threatened by a large number of drones and missiles on strategic bombers," Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.

The highest number of casualties occurred in the Khmelnytskyi region in the western part of the country; four people were killed and five injured.

"Tonight, the Khmelnytskyi region came under Russian enemy fire, as a result of which civilian infrastructure was destroyed; there are dead and wounded," regional government chief Serhiy Tyurin reported.

In the Zhytomyr region in northwestern Ukraine , three children aged 8 to 17 were killed . Twelve people were injured.

One person was killed and five injured in a drone attack on the southern city of Mykolaiv .

Tkachenko added that debris from the downed drone fell on a five-story residential building in the Holoslivsky district, near the center, starting a fire. Four people were injured. The building was partially destroyed. Firefighting and rescue operations are underway.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that three people were injured in other areas of the city.

According to witnesses, the sound of fire from air defense systems could be heard in the city.

Ihor Terekhov , the mayor of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, said Russian drones had fallen on three districts of the city overnight, damaging several buildings. Telegram also reported a Russian attack on Odessa on the Black Sea.

The missile attack on Ukraine was met with a routine response from the Polish Army. Our multi-role aircraft were scrambled for possible protection of Polish airspace.

"In connection with the attack by the Russian Federation carrying out strikes on objects located in the territory of Ukraine, Polish and allied aviation began operating in our airspace. In accordance with the applicable procedures, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces activated all available forces and resources at his disposal, the on-duty fighter pairs were scrambled, and the ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems reached the highest state of readiness.
