Red flags prohibiting entry into the water are flying at dozens of seaside resorts on Sunday. This is due in part to high waves in the Baltic Sea and strong countercurrents.

Data published on Sunday by the Bathing Service of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate shows that several dozen seaside bathing areas in northern Poland are closed due to strong winds, high waves and strong reverse currents.

In the West Pomeranian Voivodeship these are bathing areas in Świnoujście, Międzyzdroje, Międzywodzie, Dziwnów, Pobierowo, Pustków, Trzęsacz, Rewal, Niechorze, Pogorzelica, Mrzeżyno, Rogów, Dźwirzyno, Grzybowo, Sianożęty, Ustronie Morskie, Gąski, Sarbinowo, Chłopy, Mielenko, Mielno, Łazy and Darłowo.

Moreover, the water is unsuitable for swimming at the swimming areas in Stepnica on the Szczecin Lagoon, Borne Sulinowo on Lake Pile, and Mirosławiec on Lake Kosiakowo. Cyanobacteria have bloomed in these areas.

Bathing in water contaminated with cyanobacteria can cause adverse reactions, ranging from skin rashes to reddened eyes. Drinking may cause digestive problems, including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Current information on bathing water conditions can be found on the information website of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate.
