Wim Fissette spoke out on Iga Świątek's case. "We've never seen this before"
Since October 2024, Fissette has been an important part of the Polish tennis leader's staff — as her head coach. Since then, he has had the opportunity to observe her extraordinary talent up close. "At just 23, Iga has proven that she is the best player in history on clay courts," says Fissette. "But she puts a lot of pressure on herself to live up to her own ambitions. Sometimes too much," he adds, as quoted by L'Equipe.
The Belgian coach emphasizes that Świątek's perfectionism is a trait rarely seen even among top players. According to Fissette, it is this that underlies her incredible achievements, but it can also be a source of psychological strain. "She leaves nothing to chance. It's one of the reasons she has achieved so much, but it's also something that can overwhelm her," he explains.
Fisette also notes the huge amount of success his protégé has enjoyed in recent years. “I would go so far as to say she has changed tennis in some ways, because we’ve never seen anyone move and switch from defense to attack the way she does. But the challenge, even when you’re number one, is to keep trying to improve yourself,” he says.
Iga Świątek has been going through a sporting crisis recently, and the Roland Garros tournament is ahead of her. She has triumphed on the French courts three times in a row, which means the pressure is enormous, and any other result than victory will be perceived as a defeat.
