Panic on the European island. Tourists no longer want to come

Germans, previously the number one tourist destination in Majorca, are canceling their vacations on the Spanish island. All because of a series of protests organized against overtourism. Hoteliers fear that the fight for the welfare of the residents may turn against them. However, they still hope that the lower interest is just a temporary crisis that will be resolved by last-minute bookings. In the meantime, more demonstrations will take place in the island's capital on June 15.

Germans don't want to fly to Majorca

Although Poles love their holidays in Majorca, they are still far behind tourists from Germany, who have even outstripped the British in terms of bookings. However, it seems that the love for the Spanish island has waned somewhat, and it is the fault of the locals themselves. According to the latest data, both the number of bookings made by German tourists and the revenues in local gastronomy are gradually falling. "We see that the German market, traditionally our number 1 market, is the one that has slowed down the most," says Pablo Riera-Marsy from the local association of hoteliers.

Last minute hope

Panic is creeping in among the island’s business community. There is also a lack of more moderate statements from experts who pin their hopes on last-minute bookings. The problem is that more anti-tourism protests are planned in Majorca, and nothing scares potential holidaymakers away as much.

On June 15, residents will hold mass demonstrations across the country demanding restrictions on short-term rentals and sustainable development, among other things. “Mark your calendars and pack your raincoats,” warns The New York Times, referring to previous strikes in which tourists were sprayed with plastic water guns.
