Tourists complained about it all the time in Capri. Finally the mayor signed a ban

On the island of Capri, a ban on harassing and soliciting tourists has been introduced. The decree was signed by Mayor Paolo Falco. Among other things, it prohibited approaching with menus and advertising leaflets, as well as any intrusive promotion of services.

Violation of these regulations is punishable by financial penalties as well as the suspension of the operation of a shop, catering or service establishment for three days.

The island in the Bay of Naples is experiencing a tourist siege. Thousands of people from all over the world come there every day. They are often approached by people showing them restaurant menus, handing out leaflets advertising shops, bars and various services provided there.

The ban was supported by the Italian Consumer Union , which stressed in a statement:

- Enough with wild brokerage, putting pressure on consumers and illegal occupation of public space.

The organisation said it was "an expected, brave and necessary decision that responds to the need to protect residents and tourists from intrusive commercial behaviour, often carried out by disregarding the rules and deceiving consumers".

As the association's activists added, in recent years the phenomenon of solicitation has gotten out of control on Capri. "The time has come to say: enough," they noted.
