Lula praises Trump for defending end to war in Ukraine

BRASILIA, MAY 14 - Amid the possibility of a meeting with Russian head of state Vladimir Putin to address the war in Ukraine, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) praised this Wednesday (14) the attitude of the President of the United States, Donald Trump , in defense of the end of the conflict in Eastern Europe.

"I sincerely, with all the differences I may have with Trump and he may have with me, I think his decision about the war [in Ukraine] was important, because you had our friend [former president Joe] Biden talking about war every day, talking about destroying Russia every day, and Trump came and said 'no, we need to stop this war', I thought it was great", said Lula.

The statement was made in Beijing on Tuesday night (13) before the Brazilian president's departure for Moscow, where he said he will try to talk to Putin to convince him to participate in a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in Istanbul, Turkey, next Thursday (15).

Lula reported that the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Andrii Yermak, called the foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, asking Brazil to intercede in favor of a meeting between Putin and Zelensky.
