Altura hosts the European leg of the world's toughest marathon.

Avenida 24 de Junho, in Altura, was chosen to represent Europe in this year's edition of "The Great World Race" , considered the largest and most difficult marathon in the world, which takes place on November 19th, between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.
The event, consisting of seven marathons held over seven days and across seven continents, puts Altura, Castro Marim, the Algarve, and Portugal in the spotlight on the European and international stage.
According to the Castro Marim municipality, around 70 athletes of various ages and nationalities are participating in this demanding competition, which begins in Antarctica (Wolf's Fang), passes through Oceania (Perth) and Asia (Abu Dhabi), before arriving in Altura, where the runners encounter a unique setting that combines natural and urban landscapes, Algarve beaches and the traditions of Castro Marim, such as salt and fleur de sel.
This will be the first time the race takes place in Portugal, a challenge recognized for its toughness and demanding nature, forcing athletes to push themselves both physically and mentally, facing distinct weather conditions and courses with very different characteristics along the 42 kilometers.
Between each marathon, participants travel aboard a plane adapted as a hotel, where they rest before the next stage. After passing through Altura, they continue to Latin America (Cartagena) and North America (Miami), where the competition ends.
The European leg of "The Great World Race" is organized by Ice Cap Adventures, in partnership with the Municipality of Castro Marim.
