<i>Mr. & Mrs. Smith</i> Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

The world was perhaps a little hesitant when word first broke that Donald Glover, the mind behind Atlanta, Swarm, and the musical persona Childish Gambino, was going to recreate Brangelina’s famous action-rom-com Mr. & Mrs. Smith. But when it finally premiered in February, he had us hooked.
Starring Glover (who’s also an executive producer) and Maya Erskine of Pen15, the eight-episode first season follows two strangers-turned-spies recruited to work for a secret agency, while posing as a married couple. The saga follows not only their string of high-risk missions around the world, but also the evolution of their very real romance. With some episodes directed by Hiro Murai (Atlanta, The Bear) and Amy Seimetz (The Girlfriend Experience), the series gives an intimate, relatable portrayal of a relationship, from the awkward first date, to petty fights, to sexual banter, to how work can affect a couple’s power dynamics.
During the 2024 Emmys season, Mr. & Mrs. Smith jumped into the competition with 16 nominations. First, Glover (John Smith) and Erskine (Jane Smith) are Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress in a Drama Series nominees. Glover also received a nomination for his writing work. Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Michaela Coel, and Parker Posey have been nominated as guest stars. Some of the show’s other nominations included Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Stunt Performance, and Outstanding Casting.
With the entire first season now streaming on Prime Video, viewers are surely anxious to hear what’s next for the Smiths, especially after that explosive finale. Here’s what we know so far.
Will Mr. & Mrs. Smith return for a season 2?Despite previously being renewed for a second season back in May, Mr. & Mrs. Smith has now been “delayed indefinitely,” according to Deadline. Sources also told the outlet that the decision is due to “cast issues.”
The news of a second season was announced three months after the show premiered to glowing reviews.
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said at the time, according to Deadline. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
The series’ arrival was a long time coming, first being announced in 2021 with Phoebe Waller-Bridge attached to play Jane. A year later, Erskine officially replaced the Fleabag creator in the role. Almost two years after that, Mr. & Mrs. Smith finally premiered.
What had the team said about the potential second season?The show’s co-creator Francesca Sloane previously told The Wrap that there are already ideas simmering behind-the-scenes to continue the series. “We have been cooking up some really amazing ideas, if the world should want that, and we should be so lucky to put that out. We have a lot of juice in the tank.”
She added, “If we were to do a Season 2, we would hope to blow Season 1 out of the water. And if not, we’re really happy with the full story that Season 1 tells.”
Glover even seemed to hinted that the decision would be up to Sloane. “We’ve definitely talked about all the things we could do and what we want to do, but Fran is the leader of this,” he told The Wrap at the show’s premiere in NYC. “I’m doing a lot of things, but she always had such a good vision for this… whatever she wants to do really is what we’re doing.”
Who would have been in the cast?Mark Eydelshteyn (who plays Ivan, the petulant heir of a Russian oligarch, in Sean Baker’s Anora) was set to star as Mr. Smith in season 2, according to Deadline. The casting for Mrs. Smith was still undecided. Apparently, Billie Eilish (who appeared in Glover’s Swarm in 2023), was rumored to be in the running, but it didn’t work out because she’s on tour. But per Deadline, the production was “seeking an actor and actress in their 20s to play John and Jane, respectively, in Season 2 with one-year deals.”

Whether Glover and Erskine might have returned was also unconfirmed—but that depended on whether or not their John and Jane Smith survived the season 1 finale.
In a June 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, neither lead would confirm if they were reprising their roles. “It’s like ruining Christmas,” said Glover. Erskine added, “It’ll be more fun if you see the second season.”
Season 1 featured a number of celebrity cameos, including Alexander Skarsgård, Ron Perlman, Parker Posey, Michaela Coel, Sarah Paulson, and Paul Dano. It’s unclear if some would have returned in season 2.
What would season 2 have been about?(Reminder: spoiler warning!) Season 1 ends on a major cliffhanger regarding John and Jane’s status. Most of the finale has them chasing each other around New York City, trying to “terminate” the other, which culminates in a shootout in their gorgeous brownstone. While a dose of truth serum has them forming an emotional truce, their vulnerable confessions are cut short with the arrival of the Other John and Jane Smith sent to kill them both. The confrontation results in Other John dying and our John getting shot in the stomach, holding on for dear life with Jane in the panic room while Other Jane waits outside to kill them. The final scene is depicted from outside the building, with guns flashing inside the apartment window. When the credits start rolling, it’s unclear who, if anyone, made it out alive.
But there is one important detail to note: Before the final shootout, Jane revealed in the panic room that she only had one bullet left. John had none. Yet the closing shot shows three flashes in the window. If Jane fired once, did Other Jane shoot her twice? Or did Other Jane fire one shot at Jane another at John? Or did she fire all three shots, killing them both? Considering the math, things are not looking good for our John and Jane, especially considering the episode is titled “A Breakup” after all.
Still, is there a possibility that John and Jane survived? Will they continue with their jobs and eventually try to raise a kid? Could Jane’s father even make an appearance in the future? And if the couple did indeed meet their demise, could the series become an anthology, introducing another Mr. and Mrs. Smith next season? If season 2 would’ve moved forward, the series had a lot of questions to potentially answer.
