The YouTube video platform has officiallyannounced the introduction of the option to dub videos into different languages. Thanks to the new feature, millions of authors of video materials posted on YouTube will have the opportunity to attract a wider range of viewers around the world. This function is expected to become available on the platform in the near future.
The YouTube team launched a test project to test the multilingual dubbing feature in 2023. A limited number of video creators took part in it, including American YouTubers MrBeast, Mark Robert, and chef Jamie Oliver. The AI-powered voice translation tool uses Google's Gemini model to convey the author's intonation nuances and emotions.
YouTube data shows that creators who added audio in multiple languages saw their videos in a language other than their primary language account for over 25% of their total viewing time, on average. Chef Jamie Oliver, for example, tripled his views by adding multilingual audio. Mark Robert has one of the highest numbers of multilingual audio tracks, averaging over 30 languages per video, making his new work available to his entire fan community from Seoul to Sao Paulo.
The YouTube team is also testing multilingual thumbnails for videos with a select group of content creators. Starting in June, they can customize their thumbnails to display text in other languages, targeting their international audience. Localized thumbnails include text in the language users prefer based on where they live.
