Reform century: Economic codes of the new era

DATES As the year 2001 shows , we are at a press conference in a small hall of a hotel in Sultanahmet, Istanbul. President Tayyip Erdoğan introduces the newly established party together with his founding friends. I am among the journalists following that meeting. Erdoğan, who explains the AK Party and its founding philosophy and answers questions, states that the sole purpose of doing politics is to "serve the people" and ends his speech with the following sentence:

A Türkiye that experienced the historic crisis of 2001. The economy has hit rock bottom, the people are devastated. Production has stopped, macro balances have been disrupted, and problems have grown in many sectors, especially finance...

IMMEDIATELY ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES

The AK Party first changed this landscape with the government. The economy revived. With the investment, production, export and employment motto that started at that time, all balances were rapidly corrected within a year. Our companies that boast about their turnover today grew thanks to the investment and production climate that was founded back then. First, the bad atmosphere in the economy was eliminated with reforms and revolutionary regulations. Then, social parties were targeted and welfare was spread to the masses. The working class benefited from the low interest and high purchasing power provided while owning houses and cars. The forgotten low-income people felt the compassionate hand of the state. Then, giant investments came one after another. The development drive continued uninterruptedly with mega projects, roads, bridges and countless infrastructure investments. Figures such as growth, national income, reserves, export and employment broke records by multiplying the history of the Republic. Many issues such as unemployment, inflation and current deficit ceased to be a problem. On the one hand, a change and transformation that the world envied, especially in the defense industry, was experienced. The vulnerabilities in the economy were eliminated and a resilient structure resistant to external shocks was created. During the 2008 crisis, the pandemic period, the treachery against the country, internal and external attacks, this resilient structure in the economy protected us and minimized our losses. The rapid healing of the wounds with the earthquake, the disaster of the century, and the recovery of 11 cities were all thanks to the contribution of this solid foundation. At this point, we see a leadership and staff movement that has always renewed itself for 24 years and ensured the change and transformation of the country. There is no such example in the history of world politics. REFORM CENTURY It is understood from President Erdoğan's speeches at the congress on Sunday that the economy will once again be the leading actor in the period ahead. With the reform, transformation and development drive in the economy that started in 2002, signs were given that social development would continue to increase.

CITIZENS WILL FEEL

President Erdoğan actually gave the codes of the new period in his speech under the titles. The new period will be a period in which prosperity will be felt and the problems of large segments of society will be resolved.

The transformation in the economy will continue with structural reforms, and sustainable growth that will be felt by all segments of society will be the priority.

The motto of investment, production, export and employment will continue unchanged, and a growing Türkiye will continue to provide employment for its people. Inflation, which the whole world is struggling with, will be reduced as soon as possible, measures related to this will be implemented one by one, and the cost of living will be removed from the public's agenda. As purchasing power increases, those with low and fixed incomes will feel more prosperity.

Since it is an economic infrastructure that can quickly adapt to the changing world, issues such as digital transformation and green transformation will be on the agenda.

The construction drive that has been ongoing since 2002 will accelerate on the social housing side, rent and housing prices that trigger inflation will no longer be a problem, and citizens will be able to own their homes under affordable conditions. Working life will be adapted to the changing world. New working models and programs that will enable disadvantaged groups to participate more in employment will enter our lives. Thanks to the measures to be taken in this regard along with food supply security, citizens' access to cheap and healthy food will be easier. With the advantage of its geographical location, Türkiye will unleash its potential and become the new base of energy and production.

INVESTMENT WILL NOT END

The new period will be a period in which investments and the mega projects we are accustomed to will continue, especially in areas such as the defense industry, energy, modern cities, and infrastructure.

Türkiye will continue to be one of the most important power centers of its region and the world with its economy, social life, human resources, production and investment power.
